Thank you Annie for providing us with a listening ear and reassurance for making informed decisions all the way until baby made his arrival. You made me feel comfortable in all our choices and reassurance following reflection on our previous fourth trimester. - L

Thank you so much for taking such good care of me throughout my pregnancy. You were always so calm and reassuring during our appointments and I will forever be grateful for the continuity of care provided. I always felt well supported in my choices, even though they changed. - L

WHY CHOOSE INDEPENDENT CARE?

Independent midwives (IM's) have undergone the same training as NHS midwives and we are all regulated by the same body - The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) - therefore upholding the same standards of practice and working within the Code of Conduct. IM's are self employed and work for themselves as well as for YOU! I believe that being an IM truly enables the provision of holistic, relationship based care that puts you first. Independent care is about providing relevant information rather than advice and supporting your decision making along the way. You will feel informed to make the choices that are right for you and your baby, free from fear, bias or coercion. We have the time to explore and discuss evidence based information to ensure you feel included, supported, valued and respected.

Booking with me provides one point of contact during your pregnancy and beyond, which is beneficial in providing piece of mind. Any potential issues can be quickly discussed and resolved before escalating. Working with me does not mean you cannot access care through the NHS, and we often work collaboratively, but it does mean you will have someone who cares about you and your experience, guaranteed to be supporting you for the birth of your baby. Someone you know and trust.

Continuity of carer from a known and trusted midwife has been shown to:

  • Increase the likelihood of a physiological birth

  • Reduce the likelihood of a caesarean section or forceps delivery

  • Shorten labour

  • Reduce the amount of pain-relieving drugs used

  • Increase the likelihood of successfully breastfeeding

  • Increase the likelihood of a positive birth experience

  • Reduce the likelihood of suffering from postnatal depression.

Your safety is a priority to me, and your birth team will be highly trained and skilled to deal with situations that may arise during your birth. We carry emergency equipment and drugs to support in these situations should we need. I will always refer to NICE (National Institute of Clinical Excellence) guidance, as well as local guidance and up to date research to ensure I provide high quality informative care.

It is a legal requirement in this country for all midwives to have appropriate insurance, and this is included in my packages of care. I am a member of the RCN (Royal College of Nursing) who provide insurance for antenatal and postnatal care, and will soon be registered with Zest, who provide insurance for the full continuum of care.
